Message : Greetings,

I am writing to you today to ask for your help. As you may be aware, at the direction of our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction Bill Blair is in the process of examining the possibility of a ban on handguns and ¿assault weapons.¿. Members of Canada's firearm owning community understand that a ban of this kind will be unfairly punish the owners of semi-automatic rifles and handguns, and will seriously endanger the future ownership of any kind of firearm.

Our family collects historical firearms and we are avid target shooters, it is time to take action to protect our hobby and personal property. Together with my eldest son and husband, I have co-authored an e-petition to Minister Blair, opposing a handgun and ¿assault weapon¿ ban, and requesting that the Minister respect law-abiding Canadians who own firearms. In the time since we launched the petition in October, we have gathered over 30,000 signatures.

The link to the e-petition, e-1883, is as follows:

If the link doesn¿t work please type ¿e-petition 1883¿ into google.

While it is certainly true that petitions do not necessarily guarantee results, and while some individuals may argue that these efforts are a waste of time, it is imperative that this petition receives widespread support for the following reasons:

It challenges that dangerous narrative that Canadians support the proposed ban.

The Canadian Coalition for Gun Control, led by Wendy Cukier, has launched a competing e-petition in support of the proposed ban (e-1923).

This e-petition is an integral aspect of a much larger effort against the ban, involving political engagement in various forms.

It is imperative that all Canadian firearm owners, regardless of the class of firearms they own, support these efforts. While a handgun and semi-automatic rifle ban may not affect every firearm owner directly, it sets a dangerous precedent by affirming the flawed idea that banning and confiscating privately owned firearms is the solution to crime and gang violence.

In light of what I have explained above, I strongly encourage you to please share this petition with your members. We must send a strong message to Ottawa that a ban is not the answer and that law abiding firearm owners are not the problem.
