The Wildlife Division of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture - will be partnering with us again this summer for a full-day youth event on
SATURDAY, JULY 30 / 2022 at the Upper Humber Rod and Gun Association at 177 Goose Arm Road in Deer Lake. Details are being finalized. Please stay tuned.
We will have limited seating capacity for our youth which will depend on our number of available confirmed volunteers for this event.
Any one wishing to volunteer with us during this event are asked to contact me asap so that we can establish our required numbers. 709 686 5228 or respond to this email.
We are hoping that we have "Many Volunteers" who will be assisting us with our event. It does us all good to be able to come together for a common cause of promoting the great outdoor activities for our youth. With safety being the priority concern for everyone involved with any shooting or outdoor activity, practices for safe hunting and the shooting sports for our youth are given the utmost attention. Strict rules which have been applied in the past are relaxed with regards to Covid Safety as well. Hand sanitizers, and wipes are available and masks may be worn at the discretion of the individual persons.
The event will provide an opportunity for our youth aged 12-17 to participate in shotgun, rifle, and archery in a safe environment under the direct supervision and guidance of qualified instructors and volunteers.
There will be a nominal registration fee of $10.00 per youth to participate in this event. The fee will be collected upon registration the morning of the event.
All firearms, archery and other equipment along with related safety gear will be provided for the day by the Wildlife Division. No other equipment will be permitted.
Participants will learn about wildlife, outdoor safety, wilderness survival skills, and responsible hunting practices. Our Deer Lake SAR team members will be giving a discussion on outdoor wilderness safety and responsibilities.
There will be opportunities for youth to win prizes, and those participants between 12 to 17 years old will have their name entered in our Province's Youth Hunting and Fishing Program draw for a chance to participate in a hunting or fishing activity.
During lunch time, a competition to identify animals, ducks and other game birds, the judging of distances to animal and bird silhouettes, and other interesting material will be held. As part of the competition, Youth will be given some instruction on using compasses. There will also be a session on taking or reading compass bearings and giving distances between markers which will be a part of the competition.
Participants are required to pre-register for the event. Registration will take place on a first-come, first-served basis until all our spaces are filled.
After that we will take names for stand by positions should someone not be able to attend and seating becomes available.
All youth in attendance must be accompanied by a parent and / or guardian for the entire day.
The Youth will be divided into 4 groups with each group rotating through all of the programs in a timely manner.
The event will go ahead, rain or shine so dress according to weather conditions. Bring along rain gear and remember also to bring along sunblock and a hat. We are all aware of our ever changing Newfoundland weather conditions.
Thank you for your interest in our partnered program for the Youth of Newfoundland and Labrador. By developing those necessary skills we are instilling upon these youth a heartfelt interest in our outdoor sports through hunting, fishing, and conservation minded activities. The many skills and lessons learned by our youth on this day will be an introduction for many to a lifetime of safely enjoying the great outdoors and wilderness activities which we all share.
In attendance for the day will be Archery Instructors. Members of the Deer Lake Search and Rescue team will be doing outdoor wilderness awareness and survival training. Media members will be invited. Members of the Wildlife Division and others from the Dept. of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture will be in attendance as well as members from Delta Waterfowl and Firearms Instructors and our Volunteers. We could also have invited distinguished guests.

Welcome to our website.
This year our applications for membership will not be mailed out as per past years. We are in a era of new and modern digital communications. The Upper Humber Rod and Gun Association has decided to take advantage of these technologies. We are hopeful they will help with processing applications and will surely reduce our associated mailing costs and time with processing. This type of processing is now the normal way for most clubs and group memberships.
2022 Membership applications can now be found online on our website under Membership. They are available for Renewal, New Memberships, Youth, and Students of post secondary education.
www.upperhumberrodandgun.com
We have made our applications much user friendly with the removal of the Jpeg white washed image of our crest and replaced it with a small crest. This will eliminate the issue of unusable applications which were apparent with some browsers and computer systems. Printing the applications will now be much clearer.
Funds can be electronically transferred to our email address at
uhrgassoc@gmail.com
Please be sure to make a notation of who the funds are for, especially if the funds are coming from someone else on your behalf.
For those wishing to do so, applications, cheques, or money orders can still be sent via regular mail to our address as noted on the application. Applications and copies of your PAL can be photo copied, scanned or jpeg pictures taken and forwarded to our email address uhrgassoc@gmail.com for processing. When submitting your application, check that the application is complete with your copies of both sides of your PAL and the funds are submitted in order for us to process your applications without delay.
We are currently waiting for our NFA insurance cards and hope to have them very soon from Edmonton.
We wish that this membership process will expedite your membership and make it easier to access the application files.
For those in or visiting Corner Brook, Barnes Sporting Goods on Humber Road can assist you with your membership applications. We pick them up from there on a regular basis.
Anyone wishing a mailed copy of the membership applications can do so by contacting us by email at
mail4upperhumber@gmail.com
or by phone at 709 686 5228 or contacting any of our Board members. We will be happy to forward a copy to you.
Please share this message.
Thank you all for your past membership with us. We look forward to seeing you again at and enjoying our facilities in 2022 and beyond.
All the best,
Wendell Smith

APRIL 28/ 2021 UPDATE
LEVEL 2 AWARENESS - COVID-19 ACTION PLAN
RANGE USE REMAINS AT YOUR OWN RISK
Due to the COVID-19 and the declaration of a Public Health Emergency by the Province of Newfoundland Labrador, The Executive and Board of the Upper Humber Rod and Gun Association has enacted an action plan for our ranges and the Association similar to those used in other outdoor events.
Updates have been made related to the Alert Awareness which is now at
" LEVEL 2 "
Considering Health Canada’s guidance that outdoor activities present a lower risk but social distancing is still recommended, please note the following;
• UHRGA group activities and rentals are permitted with restrictions.
• The clubhouse will remain closed until further notice but may be made available under very strict guidelines and with strict cleaning measures put in place before and after each event and group activity.
Masks must be worn in any public building.
• Continued use of ranges by members to a maximum number of persons as allowed by our Provincial Government / group / range during a "Level 2" Alert Awareness and as long as the 6 foot / 2m Safe distancing measures can be maintained as per public health. This MUST be strictly adhered to.
• Social distancing shall be maintained by all persons at all times on all ranges and buildings. The only exception is your guests who are persons within your own Family Bubble as defined by the Provincial Government. Protect yourself and others, Wearing a mask is a safe practise and is encouraged on the ranges.
• Use only every second shooting platform and/or maintain safe social distance between each person including those at shooting positions.
· Special measures have been put in place by the Trap team for additional COVID-19 safety.
• Members/guests are responsible for their own hand washing measures / sanitization and each person will assume any and all risks when touching any surfaces including locks, doors, tables, chairs, and surfaces. It is a good idea to bring along cleaning/disinfectants. We will try to maintain sanitizing products outside for your use but please bring along your own.
• Leave nothing behind, everything you bring in you must bring out including shell casings, cartridges and boxes, drink bottles and cans.
• If someone or group is using the range, please consult from a distance and wait in your vehicle / or safe area until they are finished.
• Please be respectful of others waiting.
• Memberships will continue. Contact myself directly for any issues or concerns.
We will review/renew our action plan every 2 weeks but it may be changed or cancelled at the discretion of the UHRGA Executive and Board, direction of Health Canada, or our Provincial Government where Government Regulations will be proclaimed the rule of the day. Please ; Keep yourself informed.
These are challenging times and we all are expected to do our part in preventing the spread of this virus and keeping our hospitals and health care persons from being overwhelmed. By Staying Safe we help others stay safe !

Good Morning Everyone,
Last week, we were planning to call a meeting for today April 14 but covid hit again closer to home and the decision was made to keep everyone safe and to postpone until next week when hopefully the situation will improve.
So, until further notice:
On Wednesday evening April 21st / 2021 at 7:30 PM we will be having a meeting at the Upper Humber Rod and Gun facilities on Goose Arm Road in Deer Lake.
All safety measures and precautions will be taken seriously during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our building will be cleaned, sanitized and readied for our meeting.
Masks must be worn by everyone and hand sanitizers will be used when entering and leaving the facility. Safe distancing measures will be adhered to.
We would like to limit our numbers for this meeting as per the Dept of Health guidelines.
We wish all board members to make every effort to attend our meeting.
If you are not a board or committee member then please notify us prior to the meeting to ensure we can accommodate. Please direct any concerns, questions or comments to myself and I will bring them before the board on your behalf. I can be reached through this email
smith.wendell1@gmail.com
or by my home phone at 709 686 5228.
Be advised that the business of the UHRGA never stops and is being done through phone calls, emails and on occasion private meetings where safety precautions are taken.
Membership applications are ongoing and New Members are always welcome.
Please contact myself directly for concerns or any issues with membership.
Some of you have had your PAL expired over the last while. We took great pleasure working with you. By assisting you with a letter our hope is that the process will go a little smoother for you.
I know there is a backlog of applications that the CFPO has been working on, so please be patient. They also have to work through pandemic issues. Waiting times are expected to be long. My membership pending file is getting smaller so that is good which means that they are going through the system. If you have already received your new PAL, please be reminded to forward us copies of both sides and we can get your UHRGA Membership and NFA cards to you directly.
Thank you everyone. Stay Safe out there.
Wishing you all a wonderful day.

COVID-19 ACTION PLAN
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
Range will open on Saturday, March 06 / 2021 at 9 AM.
Due to the declaration of a Public Health Emergency by the Province of Newfoundland Labrador, the Executive and Board of the Upper Humber Rod and Gun Association has enacted a Covid-19 Action Plan for Level-4 for our range facilities. We have also consulted with our local Dept. of Health for advice. There will be no indoor activity at our facilities until further notice.
We are now back at an Alert Awareness Level 4 and taking into account guidance from health authorities around outdoor activities which present a lower risk, but social distancing is still to be maintained;
Please note the following;
. Washroom facilities will not be available at this time
. There is a full closure of the club house and suspension of all group activities and rentals until further notice. (The only access to the building is for security, and emergency maintenance.)
. Use of outdoor ranges is permitted if the following guidelines are strictly maintained:
. A maximum of 10 persons as per Provincial guidelines under Level 4.
. Unless you are in a family bubble, Social Distancing shall be maintained at all
times. If the 2m distancing cannot be maintained a mask MUST be worn. We recommend wearing a mask during visits under Level 4.
· Social distancing shall be maintained by all range users. Protecting yourself and others is of major concern, and remember wearing a mask is a best safe practice.
· Use only every second shooting platform and/or maintain safe social distance between each person including those at shooting positions.
· Members/guests are responsible for their own hand washing measures / sanitization and each person will assume any and all risks when touching any surfaces.
· Leave absolutely nothing behind. Everything you bring in you will bring out. This includes shell casings, cartridges, boxes, drink bottles and cans.
· If others are using the range, please consult with them from a safe distance. Wait in your vehicle or safe area until they are finished if distancing cannot be maintained.
· Please be respectful of those waiting and try not to tie up the facility.
. If you have symptoms or feel unwell, please do not visit during these unwell times.
Our board will review/renew our action plan periodically and reserve the right to make immediate changes at discretion of the UHRGA Executive and Board and under the direction of health authorities. Notices will be posted on our website and facilities as necessary.
Government Regulations will be proclaimed the rule of the day.
Please keep yourself informed. Links are provided below for guidance.
These are trying times for everyone, let’s all do our part and by protecting yourself and others we will get through this together.
The road to our facility has been cleared periodically to facilitate emergency vehicles if the need should ever arise. The parking lot will not be cleared in its entirety at this time so limited parking will be available.
Note; While we try to maintain an open road in case of any emergency, our road is not cleared on any set scheduled time. Depending on weather conditions, it may not be open. We apologize in advance should you be inconvenienced during your visit.
Processing of memberships will continue and please feel free to direct any issues or concerns to me.
